Description
Paysage du Lauragais Tapestry
The lovely Paysage du Lauragais is a French woven jacquard tapestry depicting the countryside around Lauragais in southwestern France, with a female figure that sits at a clearing in the woods contemplating the water, a chateau and fisherman in the distance. The "verdure" theme comes from the classic traditions of 17th century Aubusson tapestry in its focus on the beauty of forest and plants life in a three-dimensional rendering. The border has been kept simple to keep the eye on the scenery within the tapestry, and features flowing forms and a classic composition that looks inside towards the mountains, the farthest point.
Aubusson became renowned for its tapestries in the Renaissance, a tradition continued by French manufacturer J. Pansu. Formed in 1878, for four generations the company has developed many innovations in the tapestry industry, including its famous Halluin stitch.
